This print celebrates the historic moment when Regret, the first-ever female champion of the Kentucky Derby, claimed victory. The artwork showcases a vibrant tapestry of wildflowers in full bloom, meticulously rendered in a kaleidoscope of mesmerizing pink and purple shades to pay homage to the feminine.
Since this race occurred in 1915 and the original photos were in black and white, Aimee had to rely on the written accounts and to recreate the shades and colors of Regret and the jockey.
Regret's victory brought an avalanche of newspaper coverage to Churchill Downs' signature race and since then the Kentucky Derby has enjoyed a prestige equal to any sporting event in the world.
Years later, Winn (owner at the time of the Churchill Downs racetrack) reflected on that day: "The race needed only a victory by Regret to create some more coast-to-coast publicity to really put it over. She did not fail us. Regret made the Kentucky Derby an American institution."
